Located in the upper mission of Kelowna, a sight that would be difficult to miss can be found; the type of thing you would expect to come across in the deserts of Egypt, not Western British Columbia. This unconventional yet alluring structure is the site of the beautiful winery; Summerhill, producing world renowned organic and biodynamic wines.
Summerhill Pyramid Winery was built to be a replica of the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is four stories high and 3249 square feet; this makes it to be only an eighth of the size of the real Great Pyramid. This is where Summerhill’s wines are fermented. Taste tests were done for years prior to their big success- the same wines were taken with one fermented in the pyramid and one fermented in a regular cellar, and unanimously, the pyramid aged wine won nearly every time.
The theory behind the pyramid aging of the wine is that it is a perfectly constructed pyramid built with no metals. With the winery facing true North it helps clarify the taste of the wine over time, making it a more crisp wine. With a multitude of choices from whites, to sparkling, iced to red and speciality wines, Summerhill Winery produces some of the finest wines worldwide.
Tours of this beautiful and unique winery are offered. While you are there, check out their phenomenal bistro open from 11am – 9pm Tuesday through Friday, and 11am – 3pm for a-la-carte brunch every Saturday. If you are looking for a unique and exquisite experience in Kelowna, while sampling world famous wines, Summerhill Winery is the place to go.
