Ski and Snowboard in the Okanagan

Ready to book your next British Columbia ski vacation? Looking for an alternative to Whistler? The Okanagan valley is home to a number of mountains that have varied terrain and budget-friendly pricing.  Here are three ski resorts within easy driving distance from La Casa.

Crystal Mountain Ski Resort – West Kelowna

Exciting news! The Crystal Mountain ski area has been closed for a number of years—but the area is under development and is set to reopen under a new name and new management this winter! Fingers crossed everything goes to plan: we can’t wait to see what happens here. It’s the only ski area in West Kelowna after all, meaning it’s less than a 1 hour drive from La Casa to Crystal Mountain.

Silver Star Ski Resort – Vernon

Cozy would be the correct word to describe Silver Star.  The mountain village offers a range of ski-in, ski-out accommodation options that minimise your time from sleep to slopes. The resort is very popular with locals and has a friendly vibe, often less busy than the larger mountains…but still with an impressive amount of terrain.  Silver Star is around a 1 hour 30 minute drive from La Casa.

Big White Ski Resort – Kelowna

Big White is a Mecca for winter sports enthusiasts with an average annual snowfall of 750 cm, 16 lifts, 119 designated trails, 25km of cross country trails and more! New additions for the 2019/20 season include: an extra magic carpet for beginners, more gondola cabins on Lara’s gondola, and a new trail that allows skiers and snowboards to access Westridge earlier on in the season. Sounds good to us—and just under a 1 hour 30 minute drive from La Casa too.

Organising a group ski vacation? The La Casa Mirador Guest House can sleep up to 26 people and is perfect for large groups of family or friends. Spend some quality time together this winter (and discover a ski resort, or two).

3 Kelowna Markets to Check Out this Weekend

There’s no better way to get to know the locals than by visiting the city’s markets!  And this weekend, the last long weekend of summer, is the perfect time to do so.  Here are three markets you shouldn’t miss:

Kelowna Art Market

Art fans will want to head down to the Kelowna Art Market this week.  The art market has been running throughout the summer, but this is your last chance to check it out before it ends. Expect a variety of handcrafted pieces by local artists.  Any presents you need to buy?  Get them here! Visit the market, located near the Rotary Centre for the Arts, between 11am and 3pm on August 29 or between 4pm and 8pm on August 30.

Kelowna Farmers’ & Crafters’ Market present Kelowna’s 1st Annual Garlic Festival

Garlic: you either love it or hate it! Well if you’re the former (and throw garlic in just about every meal you make) then this is the week to head down to the Kelowna Farmers & Crafters Market.  On September 1, it will be the market’s 1st Annual Garlic Festival! The event features live music, garlic growers, demonstrations, food concessions and more. To get your garlic fix head down to the Satellite Market on St. Paul Street between 9am and 4pm.

Grizzli Winery Labour Day Market

Celebrate the long weekend at Grizzli Winery.  For the first time, the West Kelowna winery is hosting a Labour Day Market on August 31 and September 1. Enjoy stunning views of the surrounding vineyards while you browse through local artisans’ products, listen to live music and eat tasty food truck meals. The market is free and family friendly.  It’s also the ideal day to visit the winery if you haven’t already!

5 Spring Break Family Activities in Kelowna

There’s still some time to plan a fun filled Spring Break for you and the family.  Maybe going away somewhere warm isn’t your thing, so here is a list of 5 fun activities to do around the Kelowna area.

Plan a Day Trip to a Skiing Resort

Spring Skiing is a lot of fun, you might even end the day with a goggle tan. Don’t pack on the winter clothing as it does tend to be warmer in the spring. Enjoy Big White, Silver Star or Apex Mountain. All of these mountains offer spring skiing and have special days designated to ladies, kids or even mens day.

Spend a Few Hours at the Pool

Regardless if it is sunny or raining outside, the pool is always a fun place to spend some time and burn through some of that excess energy the kids may have. H2O Adventure and Fitness Club is open throughout the course of spring break and has many fun activities. Surf the Flo-rider, ride the waves in the wave pool or river run, play in pool playground, or go down one of the three water-slides or all three!

Plan a Weekend Getaway

La Casa Cottages are the perfect place to bring the family too. Whether you want to stay 2 nights or a week, we promise it will be the most relaxing getaway. There is mini golf and a playground for the kids, as well as tennis courts. Just up the road is Fintry Provincial Park where you can get out and explore nature and take a little hike.  Not ready for a vacation just yet?  Well, why not take this time to plan your summer holiday!

Discover Kelowna’s Hiking Trails

Nothing is better than spending time in nature on a nice sunny day. Take the family, or do a solo trip, to one of your favorite hiking locations. There are a few popular hikes around the Kelowna area. Knox Mountain, Crawford Falls, Lochview Trail, Canyon Falls Park are just to name a few. Please note that opening and closing times/dates may vary due to weather – if the trails are closed, make sure you come back in the summer!!

Solve a Mystery

Looking for something fun to do that requires a little bit of problem solving? Go down to one the Escape rooms in Kelowna and try to exit a room before your time is up. There are lots of different themed rooms and they range from hard to very hard. You will leave feeling completely puzzled because you didn’t finish the room in time, or super smart that you escaped the room. This is something that is great for date nights or for families with older kids to do.
