Snow Fat Bike

Three Exciting Activities to do at Silver Star Resort that aren’t skiing

Snow season is here! Vernon is home to SilverStar Mountain Resort, a gorgeous place to get your snow fix! And mountains are not just for skiers and snowboarders – they’re for everyone – so here’s some ways to get on the snow without bringing your skis:

  • Horse Sleigh Rides

Treat the whole family this holiday season with a special Hot Chocolate & Horse Sleigh Ride! Spend the afternoon journeying through the snowy mountain trails and stop at the cozy Wild Horseman’s Cabin for a warming cup of hot chocolate next to the fireplace.  If the kids are not fans of winter, then they will be after this!

  • Fat Biking

Ever wanted to ride a bike on the snow? Well, now you can! Fat bikes have wider sized tires which allow them to ride on soft terrains.  SilverStar has over 15km of fat bike trails that range from beginner to advanced – perfect for riders of all skills.  If you’re keen to ride with others, then why not join a Pedal and Pint Fat Bike Ride?  These are guided group rides that are sure to be a bundle of laughs:  experienced riders get to embark on evening rides on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 6pm, whilst Beginners can enjoy Sundays at 2pm. Get ready for a whole new adventure this season!

  • Snowmobile Tours

If you want to experience the powder of SilverStar’s backcountry without skis, then book yourself a Snowmobile tour! Tours range from one hour to three hours, depending on how much time you want to spend on the snow, and are operated by Okanagan Recreation Rentals.  Learn to ride your own Snowmobile and have fun exploring the beautiful views and terrain of the Mountain – the ideal way to spend a winter’s day!

Christmas kelowna

Kelowna’s Christmas Markets

Wondering if Kelowna is home to any Christmas Markets this year?  Well the answer is yes!  They may not compare to the traditional European markets, but these local events sure are fun.  Why not make a weekend of it and visit all three?

  • Downtown Kelowna Winter Street Market

    – This market is a favourite due to its location next to the Stuart Park ice rink! The event takes place on December 1 and features a range of local vendors from Canoe Coffee Roasters to Karat Chocolate Kelowna and Okanagan Lifestyle Apparel. From gift shopping to tasty treats, you’ll love all that these vendors have to offer. The event also features photos with Santa and a tree lighting ceremony!

  • Touch of Christmas Crafters and Vendors Fair 2018

    – Another event taking place on December 1 is the Touch of Christmas Crafters and Vendors Fair which features over 80 crafters and vendors! There’s also a silent auction, 50/50 draw, live music and door prizes. Best part about this one?  It’s for charity and your $2 entry fee goes to the Central Okanagan Community Foodbank to help those who are hungry!

  • Annual Holiday Market at Grizzli Winery

    – Spanning across the whole first weekend of December (Friday Nov 30 – Dec 2), the Holiday Market at Grizzli Winery is a free event open to the public. Enjoy an indoor market with love music, wine tasting and food pairings! There’s no better way to get into the festive spirit than by taking a trip to a winery!

Ice skating

We hope you leave each of these with a sparkle of Christmas magic! Winter Reads

6 Perfect Reads when it’s Cold Outside

1. The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe by C.S.Lewis

Family favourite The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe is the epitomy of a winter novel. Set in Narnia, a world dominated by the White Witch with frosty skies and mythical creatures, this C.S. Lewis novel will never not be popular. Snuggle up on the sofa with the whole family and read about the four siblings’ quest to overcome evil. You can embark on this adventure together as snowflakes fall outside your window – we guarantee you will get lost in this fantastical novel!

2. Game of Thrones by George Martin

It’s hard to not think of George Martin’s epic Game of Thrones series when someone mentions winter is coming (yes, that was a direct reference!) so if you haven’t read any of these books yet, then 2018 is the year to start! With Martin hinting at the sixth novel possibly being released later this year, now is the time to catch up on the plot twists, unreliable characters and ethereal creatures of the Seven Kingdoms.

3. Northern Lights by Philip Pullman

Another fantasy trilogy loved by children and adults alike is Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials which features polar bears, witches, the northern lights and daemons. Said to be an inversion and/or retelling of Milton’s Paradise Lost, these long reads will have you hooked instantly. Pick up the first novel Northern Lights, make a cup of hot chocolate and unwind from the day’s cold weather whilst sitting by the fireplace.

4. Snow Falling on the Cedars by David Guterson

Snow Falling on the Cedars is the perfect novel for when it’s chilly outside. Just the fact that author David Guterson refers to snow and cedars multiple times throughout the novel is enough to bring the winter weather inside. For a tale of love, social discrimination and prejudice – give this one a read.

5. Waiting for the Barbarians by J.M. Coetzee

For something a little more sinister and dystopian, try reading Waiting for the Barbarians by J. M. Coetzee. Winter time is ideal for getting up close and personal with Coetzee’s poetic motifs and haunting descriptions. This may be a small novel but you won’t put it down once you turn the first page – cosy up and read this masterpiece in one sitting while the weather is turning angry outside.

6. The Secret History by Donna Tartt

You’ll find The Secret History by Donna Tartt on many winter reading lists. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a twisted murder mystery? The novel is set in Vermont and features a group of college students who are enamoured by Greek language and literature. We won’t give too much away on this one but we are certain you will love the creative suspense Tartt creates. Delve into this interesting plot line and forget all about the freezing temperatures outside.
